How does metal recycling work?

An image of old metal pipes ready to be recycled

Metal is one of the most recyclable materials we have. What starts out as a brand new metal product can have multiple uses and owners, with metal recyclers like us here at Henry Orchard & Sons processing it each time an item is discarded so that manufacturers can make something new. All of this saves energy, resources and reduces pollution and the wastage dumped in landfill sites.

STEP 1. Collection

Consumers like you, or tradespeople or organisations such as the military or vehicle fleet owners start the process when you identify scrap metal and bring it to a trusted metal recycling facility like us. For large amounts, we can arrange collection, or you can bring it to us.

STEP 2. Processing

Once we receive your scrap metal, we begin the sorting process. First, metals are separated from other materials. Plastic and non-metallic pieces are removed from items. Then, the metals are sorted by type, such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

The next step is processing.  Metals are squeezed together to take up less space and then cut into chunks using hydraulic machinery.

STEP 3. Melting

The metal is then melted using a furnace, which is set to different temperatures depending on the metal being processed and its particular melting point.

STEP 4. Electrolysis

Some metals need to be purified through electrolysis. Here, an electric current is passed through the metal which has the effect of separating pure metal and dissolving impure metals.

STEP 5. Solidifying

At this final stage, chemicals are added to the melted metal to create the desired properties. The melted metals are then sent to a cooling chamber where they will solidify.

STEP 6. Back to a manufacturer

Once cooled and solid, the metals are transported to manufacturers who use this recycled metal to make brand new products. It might end up as a new stainless steel coffee cup for you, or part of a vehicle — there are so many uses for recycled metal!
