As the cost of living crisis goes on, more and more people are being approached by scrap metal dealers. But if you are facing the difficult decision of saying goodbye to your old, unrepairable car, there are a few things it is important to consider. Here’s a guide…

When a vehicle reaches the end of its road, it’s essential to handle the scrapping process safely and responsibly. Not only does this protect you legally, but it also ensures that the environment benefits, and you can still get a good deal.

Here, at Henry Orchard and Sons, we have the expertise and tools to help you navigate the scrapping process with ease, from adhering to legal requirements to ensuring eco-friendly disposal and receiving a fair price for your scrap metal.

  1. Legal Issues: Complying with the Law

The first step in scrapping your car safely is to be aware of the legal requirements. Firstly,  it is important to know that it is now illegal to pay cash for scrap metal and that includes your old car.

As the last registered owner of the vehicle, you also have a responsibility to ensure that the scrapping process is done legally, so you need to check that the scrap metal dealer you sell your car to has a licence. Click here to see the Register of Scrap Metal Dealers. Failure to comply can lead to fines from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) in the future.

You also have responsibility to inform the DVLA that the registered keeper has changed.  Once the car has been sold you should let them know as soon as possible to avoid any potential issues with you remaining liable for it.  This can be done either online or with the v5c by post.

Make sure that you get a DVLA Certificate of Destruction: these can be issued for vehicles that are complete and have the correct documents (V5c – Log Book) accompanying them. This informs the DVLA that the vehicle has been responsibly scrapped system, and, this also means the remaining road fund license should be automatically refunded by the DVLA.

  1. Eco-Friendly Disposal: Minimizing Environmental Impact

Scrapping your car in an eco-friendly manner is not only a moral obligation but also a legal requirement. Proper disposal involves dismantling and processing the vehicle in ways that minimize its impact on the environment. This includes recycling as much of the vehicle as possible and disposing of hazardous materials safely.

Henry Orchard and Sons is dedicated to eco-friendly processes. We have specialized equipment to depollute and process vehicles safely, ensuring that the environmental impact is as minimal as possible.

  1. Get a Fair Price

While legality and environmental responsibility are crucial aspects of scrapping your car, you also want to ensure you get a fair return for your vehicle.

When you bring your car to us, you can expect a fair and transparent valuation process. We assess the value of your vehicle, considering factors like its weight, condition, and the current market rates for scrap metal. This ensures that you receive the best possible deal for your old car.
